The preparation for your puppy

The whelping box

At Madi's Paws Ethical Dog Breeder we use a whelping box, also known as a nesting box, whelping den

To reduce the chance of a problem, we set up a whelping box for our pregnant Breeding Dog well before she's due to give birth, and make sure it's positioned in a warm, quiet, calm place way from the busy areas of your home

While our mum is giving birth, we keep an eye on her and we only intervene if it is absolutely necessary

We keep our whelping box warm and between 24 to 27 degrees, in our quiet area which is safe and  away from household traffic

We line the whelping box with absorbent mats and we make the whelping box available to our pregnant Breeding Dogs about 7 to 10 days before her anticipated due date so she can get accustomed to laying in it comfortably

The birth of your puppy

The birth

At Madi's Paws Ethical Dog Breeder when our pregnant mum's water breaks (rupture of the amniotic sac), the first puppy is usually born within 1-2 hours

When contractions are strong, the first puppy might be born within 20-30 minutes

The time between puppies can vary from 5 minutes to 1.5 hours

First puppy:The first puppy usually takes the longest to be born, especially if contractions are weak, Most puppies are born head first but some come tail first, puppies are born inside a thin sac, which the mother will remove, enabling them to breath

After each puppy, mum should pass the afterbirth (placenta), which they often eat. The placenta is the structure that provides oxygen and nutrients to the puppy while it’s developing in the womb

A placenta appears approximately 15 minutes after each puppy, however, they don’t always come in order, sometimes a few pups are born before their placentas are passed

If not all placentas are passed, it’s possible for an infection called ‘metritis’ to develop in the weeks following whelping

If mum has a large litter, we stop her from eating too many placentas as this can lead to vomiting and diarrhoea

Between each puppy, we ensure our mum is comfortable, settled and licking her newborn pups until her contractions restart

There will be some clear or bloody fluid coming from mum’s vulva during whelping, which is normal

Straining:In the unlikely event our mum had been straining for 20-30 minutes without a puppy, we would contact our vet immediately

Time between puppies:It is unusual but if more than two hours pass between puppies, we would seek veterinary assistance

Signs of distress:If our mum shows any signs of distress or exhaustion, we contact our vet immediately

Veterinary attention:At Madi's Paws Ethical Dog Breeder we always seek veterinary assistance if we are concerned about our mum's labor progress

Following the labour

On average, giving birth to an entire litter takes 3-12 hours from the start of contractions

The birthing process should never take longer than 24 hours – any longer and the risk of a problem becomes very high

Once our mum has given birth to all her puppies, she is likely to be very hungry and tired, she will need to eat, rest with her pups, bond with them and feed them, we make sure they are in a quiet, comfortable space where they won’t be disturbed
