About the breed
The golden retriever has an even temper, they are one of the most intelligent and affectionate breeds
They are playful, yet gentle with children, and they tend to get along well with other pets
The life expectancy of the Golden Retriever is 10-12 years, as they have a double coat, they need grooming every 6 to 8 weeks
They should weight about 30 kg, they love their food and your food, however, it is important to keep them at the correct weight for their overall health and well-being
They will need one or two daily walks, and will grow to a height of between 50-60 cm
The story of the breed began when Dudley Coutts Marjoribanks inherited a substantial fortune, and bought a mansion in London ‘Brook House’
His hobby for many years, the prevailing origin story was that Marjoribanks purchased a group of Russian circus dogs, and started breeding the famous, yellow-coated dogs from there
On a walk with his son in Brighton in 1865, Marjoribanks came across a wavy-coated dog named Nous. Belonging to a cobbler who had gotten him from an employee of a local nobleman to settle a debt, Nous had black parents but was himself gold-coloured
Three years after Marjoribanks acquired him, Nous was bred to Belle, a Tweed Water Spaniel that Marjoribanks had been given by his cousin. Now extinct, Tweed spaniels were liver-colored
It was an inspired combination, crossing a retriever to a water spaniel to create a robust hunter capable of navigating both land and water to hunt
Marjoribanks’ famous 1868 litter contained the florally monikered puppies who are considered the world’s first Golden Retrievers, the puppies were named Cowslip, Crocus and Primrose
